In review, a weapon recovered at a scene should be photographed, sketched and recorded in your note- book before it is moved. The position of the hammer (i.e. cocked, half cocked, or down) and the position of safety should be recorded. The weapon should be moved by grasping the firearm in such a way that fingerprints or other trace evidence will not be disturbed. If the grips are checkered, they may be grasped, otherwise the weapon must be moved by grasping the edges of the trigger guard, the lanyard loop or swivel, or the serrated portion of the hammer or slide.
